Today I made it official...I filed my paperwork with the State of Florida to incorporate. It seemed fairly obvious what the name should be.

If you read the previous post, you probably gathered that little fact.

All of this is related to the fact that I have a new job. I'm not quite ready to talk about the details yet but I believe there is quite a bit of opportunity here. For one, I'll be working with OBIEE again. It's been about 9 months since I last worked with and I was just getting started. There may also be some work with APEX, which would be great. Finally, there's a very outside shot that I may get to work with Exadata v2 in the somewhat near future.

Maybe you're wondering why I incorporated? I don't know, just seemed like fun. Actually, I'll be working as a consultant. This is my first real trek down that road. I have to learn about billable hours, successful travel planning...and probably most importantly, budgeting.

I'm very excited about this opportunity. I will have to travel a bit, but I'll also get to work from home quite a bit so I believe in the long run, family time will probably be greater than when I was going to that "9 to 5" type job where I was actually away from home more than 60 hours a week. We'll see.

Aah I can smell what's cooking :-) . I wish you all the best and I am sure you are going to pull it perfectly well. About the travel and family time, as I am doing travel almost for full 4 weeks at times as well(minimum is 2) , I shall just say that enjoy your travels. It can be really tiring and frustrating as well hoping from airport to airport(and bus/train stations as well) but it has its own fun. And you are completely right about the family time, its an awesome feeling while traveling back to home after couple of days!

That is a lot of travel...

I use to travel a lot when I was a kid and loved it (I used to go to airports by myself to people watch). I know I can enjoy it...I'll just need to get over the "homesickness" hump.

I can't wait to be in a position to hire DBAs! :)

That will go away and with the current times with this internet in full swing, you are really not that far at any time. Yes I understand at times, its really important to be there with the family physically, nothing else beats it. I was in Singapore when my mom had heart attack. I know how I finished my assignment and went back. All will go fine and if you love travel, there is nothing better than being a consultant :). I hope and wish all works out for you in the best manner!

Hope some of us would get a direct hotline number of CEO of Oraclenerd Inc rather than going through usual HR process ;-) .

Absolutely. You know just about every way to get in touch with me...that won't change (of course we're all assuming I'll be a big fancy CEO or something someday :)

I hear you though...I think I just need to get back into the swing of things. Just been so home-bound for so long I forgot what it's like out there.

Oh I am so sorry Chet, trust me I didn't mean at all to scare you. It just came out naturally. I just was thinking about it when you mentioned home-sickness which I feel myself a lot. Its been 3 weeks since I am hopping from airport to airport and I got a 2 day break which I immediately grabbed to come back home! I am so sorry, I am just stupid, shouldn't have mentioned it. All will go fine and these efforts of yours surely would do in the best possible benefits for you and your entire family.

No worries Aman...really. We can't control life can we? It just happens and we deal with as it comes to us.

The one thing I do think about, and I'm sure this was brought on by having children, is my own mortality. I don't dwell on it mind you...it's just there once in awhile. Or maybe that just me getting older? ;)

I think everyone should have an LLC at all times. (Yes I just recently got mine too in GA.) Just so you have that option of doing corp to corp contracts which can at times be very beneficial to you. All of your travel becomes a business expense, and is part of your LLCs tax fillings at the end of the year. Yes it's a lot more work than a simple 9-5 job, but it's for your own business which you will take so much pride in doing.

Also, being a road warrior myself for a number of years, the family will get over the fact that you're away because they know you're doing it to provide for them. Turn your Air line miles into trips and they will be more than happy to support you.

Excellent point about the travel benefits! Wifey and I were talking about that last night...hotel points, airline points...will all lead to a nice vacation sometime in the future.

Talking to my employers (who are based in GA like you), LLC is the way to go. S Corp seems the way to go in FL...but if I determine that's not the case, it's not too hard to change over to an LLC.

I agree about the pride thing too. I've been wearing my hat around for months now...this just seemed like the natural extension. To say that I am excited would be a gross-understatement!

I agree about the LLC, wish I had done it myself. There may be tax advantages, and the limited liability can make a big difference, even if you think you don't have anything of value. The only downside is if you buy large capital items such as real estate, every time you want to do anything financial everybody wants copies of incorporation, minutes, and everything else. Oh, yeah, and there's that IRS red-flagging thing, but keep the paperwork in order, they'll leave you alone real fast once they see you aren't playing games. Oh, and the double taxation... well, as they say, "see your tax advisor."

I know I was amazed as soon as I published a DBA (namespace collision!) and opened a business account I was deluged with credit offers. One was so good I'm still paying it off, cheaper than mortgage (a WTF until I realized it was a come-on where they want to make it almost impossible to stay at the low rate and avoid lockins at a higher rate, business credit doesn't have the protections of consumer credit - but being a db geek, I'm used to doing the almost impossible).
